Mentoring programs are said to be the most efficient way of succeeding in the workplace. It’s a chance for an employee and employer to achieve personal goals and a better career. Mentoring programs benefit a company in many ways like a better-trained workforce, reducing stress and anxiety, increasing job satisfaction and a positive work environment.
In a recent article on Forbes, Naz Beheshti talks about how mentoring programs have become mainstream. According to Fundera, 78.8% of employees say that being apart of a mentoring program made them feel more engaged in the workplace.
Research Corner states, most young adults lack guidance, preparation, and the resources to succeed in skilled labor and higher education problems that are among low income and minority youth.
Also over 15% of American youth fail to complete high school and even among graduates only about half ever attend to go to a 2 year or 4-year college. This creates problems in the workforce for people that have limited educational experience.
Strategies that can forge links between high school and higher education can help youth attain satisfying jobs by mentoring programs that help high school students to acquire skills, and knowledge in the workplace to succeed.
When it comes to mentoring, Millenials are the ones who want this program in the workplace to guide them. Millennials view work as a key part of life. They want their work to be able to fulfill them with new learning experiences and new skills to help with their jobs.
Mentoring is more effective than any other diversity initiatives. Mentoring programs can boost the representation of Blacks, Hispanic and Asian American women and Hispanic and Asian American men at manger levels by 9% to 24%.
The Cornell study found that “ mentoring improves both the promotion and retention of diverse groups. In fact, they help increase promotion and retention rates of minority men and women by 15% - 38% compared to non mentored minorities”.
There are so many companies that offer mentoring programs, but one in particular that stood out to me was Comcast.
Comcast is one of the largest companies that offer cable and internet. Comcast has had a mentoring program for the past 5 years and has gained nothing but positive feedback and a great staff.

Shawn Skoglund, a fulfillment supervisor at Comcast Corporation.
Shawn Skoglund, a Fulfillment supervisor for Comcast cable shared her experience of being apart of Comcast’s mentoring program. Comcast was looking for additional mentors and reached out to Shawn Skoglund, to see if she was willing to mentor for employees who were looking to grow their career within Comcast.
Comcast is all about their employee’s success. Offering this program meant that Comcast was willing to take the next step by helping each one of their employees achieve their goals within the company and their own personal ones. “Helping someone to be the best version they can be is one of the reasons why I love being a mentor”, said Shawn Skoglund.
Comcast continues to see a dramatic increase in retention and employee satisfaction, within having this program and continue to strive with their employees and business.
“Mentoring helps with improving the way we communicate with one another”, said Shawn.
