Downtown Boxing Gym youth program was founded in 2007 when Khali Sweeney realized he needed to be the change that he wanted to see in his community.

Khali Sweeney is the founder and CEO of the Downtown Boxing Gym, working to make students positive and productive members of society.


“Books before Boxing,” was Sweeney’s motto.


His knowledge and experience in boxing create a supportive environment for students establishing security and connection while focusing on academics.


For his community and mentoring work, Sweeney was awarded Michigan’s Governor’s Service Award for Mentor of the Year as well as being 2017 CNN Hero Top 10 finalist.


Over the years, Downtown Boxing Gym has gained sponsorships from notable companies like Microsoft, Comerica Bank, Ford Motors Company Fund, and etc.

Mission


Downtown Boxing Gym aims to produce positive and productive members of society through its various free services offered to the children of Detroit 8 to 18.


With education, athletics, mentorship, and intervention, they teach students valuable lessons inside and outside the classroom and boxing ring.


Services


To help students become the best they can be, Downtown Boxing Gym provides mentorships, tutoring, college and career readiness.


The participants in the Downtown Boxing Gym Youth program have a 100% graduation rate since its start in 2007.

The Downtown Boxing Gym also provides food and transportation for all of its participants all across Detroit.


Support and Join Now


For one child it costs about $7,000 per year in the Downtown Boxing gym program. 


They hope to expand to more students but need your donations and support.


They serve about 150 students per year and their waiting list continues to grow.
