Fostering the creativity of children can teach problem-solving, innovative thinking and overall, increase your child’s sense of pride and accomplishment.

Whether it’s through the written word, high-energy dance, or even the culinary sciences, these artistic programs are designed to nurture the creativity of each unique young mind.


1. InsideOut Literary Arts

This program not only provides Detroit youth with in-school writing workshops led by professional Writers-In-Residence, but it also offers several after-school programs which focus on developing creative writing and poetry skills.

InsideOut’s “Citywide Poets” program provides teens with the opportunity to work closely with mentors to expand their artistic network throughout Detroit, while also providing publication and performance opportunities.

2. ProjectArt Detroit

ProjectArt is an after-school program which works to tackle the “creativity crisis” by providing a free and accessible artistic outlet for children ages 4-18.

ProjectArt is passionate about the academic and behavioral success that art can provide children and teens, which is why they work with public libraries in seven different locations throughout Detroit, so as to reach as many people as possible.

3. S.E.E.D.


Spreading the Elements Everywhere Detroit, otherwise known as S.E.E.D., is a youth program of the Motor City Street Dance Academy which connects middle school students with high school and college-aged mentors.

Participants are able to build up a network with industry professionals and are also given opportunities to participate in dance workshops, competitions, panels, and video shoots.

Since its founding in 2015, S.E.E.D. has produced eight different dance crews in Detroit, including the Motor City Breakerz.

4. Detroit Food Academy


The Detroit Food Academy offers teens different culinary arts programs, with underlying business experience.


Not only do students gain cooking experience under the guidance of a professional academic network, but they also develop many entrepreneurial skills and gain real-life experience in the food industry.

The DFA program is organized as a year-long program split into a Fall and Spring semester, with the opportunity to enroll in a summer program.

5. Red Bull Arts Detroit Artist Residency


Red Bull Arts is a well-known visual arts exhibit in Detroit’s Eastern Market which showcases experimental artwork created by up and coming artists. Though you have to ere on the older side to apply for their Artist Residency program, its benefits are considerable.

Red Bull Arts Artist Residency grants artists with the time, space, and resources for their work over the period of two months. Not only do artists get the opportunity to live in the Red Bull Arts facilities, they gain access to in-house tools and art supplies, generous stipends should you require an assistant or more production resources, and introductions to Detroit’s creative community.
