Children are our future doctors, politicians, artists, innovators, and world-changers. Their bright minds deserve the means to achieve bright futures – and as a mentor, you can help make that happen.
Everyone deserves the opportunity to be successful. Mentors can help children and young adults receive the help and opportunities they deserve to reach for the stars. There are many forms of mentorship, but all focus on giving children and students a caring adult in their lives to help guide them to success.
The National Mentoring Partnership (MENTOR) puts it best:
“When you were young, did you know how to study for a test or make plans for college? Do you remember wanting your first car or looking for a part-time job?”
The goal of mentoring is to serve as a guide, teacher, and friend. Growing up is hard and can be exponentially harder for children with difficult circumstances. Not all students have a good home life or a parent to turn to. Many children struggle with poverty, discrimination or disability.
Mentoring is a way to help combat these struggles with the help of a network of caring, encouraging adults to support children and young adults everywhere. A good mentor is someone a student can trust that can help them set and achieve goals, make good and healthy choices and succeed in school.
Mentoring isn’t just a job or a service to young students – it can be life-changing to become a mentor. Learning to listen and be truly understanding to another person can make a difference in not just their life, but your own too. Mentoring a child or student can inspire personal growth and teach you a little about yourself, too.
